Pescara welcomes the Pedibus: a safe walk to school for children
A project to reduce traffic and smog while promoting independence, road safety education, and respect for the environment.
Today, Monday, May 11, the Pedibus Project officially got underway at the “11 febbraio ’44” primary school in Pescara. The initiative, promoted by the Municipality in collaboration with Pescara Multiservice — the company responsible for street parking management — and volunteer parents, is aimed at students in the third, fourth, and fifth grades. It gives children the opportunity to walk to school together in groups, accompanied by adults who ensure their safety.
The meeting point is located a few hundred meters from the school. From there, the children set off every morning, walking through the park’s internal green pathway before continuing along the sidewalk to the school building. Pescara Multiservice staff, led by Mirko Di Michele, together with volunteer parents, supervise the route to guarantee a safe and orderly journey.
Councillor for Events Alfredo Cremonese emphasized that the Pedibus represents “a valid alternative to car use during school arrival times, combining safety, road education, and environmental awareness.” The project aims to reduce traffic and pollution outside schools while also encouraging children’s independence and social interaction.
Councillor Loris Mazzioli, one of the first supporters of the initiative, also expressed enthusiasm and will personally take part every morning: “The Pedibus is a concrete response to the chaos outside schools. It is a sign of change toward more sustainable and conscious mobility.”
At present, around twenty students have joined the initiative, but participation is growing thanks to the possibility of registering through a dedicated app designed to simplify service management.
With the Pedibus Project, Pescara is taking an important step toward becoming a more livable, safer, and child-friendly city, where the journey between home and school becomes both an educational opportunity and a daily act of sustainability.
