IN Abruzzo: The Future Between Home Working and Nature
PESCARA – There is an idea starting to circulate through our school hallways and town squares: what if finding our “dream job” didn’t necessarily mean packing our bags for Milan or abroad? This is the bet behind IN Abruzzo, a new regional project banking on the combination of local employment and sustainable tourism.
The goal is ambitious yet clear: to transform our region into an open-air laboratory where innovation doesn’t destroy the environment, but enhances it.
Staying to Grow: Working “From Home”
For us Gen Zers, the topic of the future is often a source of anxiety. We watch our villages empty out and our historic centers turn into “ghost museums.” The IN Abruzzo project aims to reverse this trend by creating co-working hubs and boosting digital infrastructure, even in the most isolated areas.
The concept is simple: allow young professionals and creatives to keep living in their home villages, using technology to work with the entire world without sacrificing the quality of life that only our mountains and hills can offer. It’s not just about “staying”; it’s about having the tools to build a business right here.
Sustainable Tourism: Beyond “Hit and Run”
The second pillar of the project focuses on tourism. But take note: we aren’t talking about massive resorts or urban sprawl. The keyword is sustainability.
- Cycle Tourism: Enhancing bike paths along the coast and throughout the hinterland.
- Alberghi Diffusi (Scattered Hotels): Renovating old houses to host tourists, making them feel like part of the community.
- Authentic Experiences: Food and wine tours and guided treks that respect the biodiversity of the National Park.
The idea is to attract a conscious traveler—someone seeking silence, good food, and genuine contact with nature, far from the chaos of mass-market destinations.
A Challenge for Us All
At school, we often study geography and economics as distant subjects, but what is happening with IN Abruzzo affects us directly. It represents the chance to see our land no longer as a “periphery” to escape from, but as a center of sustainable innovation.
Of course, challenges remain: we need better transportation and leaner bureaucracy. But if the project manages to take off, perhaps the next “office with a view” could truly look out over the Gran Sasso or the sea of the Costa dei Trabocchi.
“The future of Abruzzo is not in concrete, but in the ability to stay true to one’s roots while looking toward the digital world.”
