Sustainable tourism: traveling without destroying

Sustainable tourism means traveling while reducing environmental impact and respecting nature, culture, and local communities. It is not just about choosing “green” destinations, but about adopting responsible behaviors throughout the entire journey—from transportation to accommodation, all the way to daily activities.

In regions like Abruzzo, rich in natural parks, historic villages, and authentic traditions, sustainable tourism becomes even more important in order to preserve a unique heritage.

THE PROBLEMS OF TRADITIONAL TOURISM

Mass tourism, although an important economic resource, has several negative effects on both the environment and the cities that host it.         One of the main problems is pollution: the heavy use of transportation such as airplanes and cars contributes to increased CO₂ emissions. In Abruzzo as well, especially during summer or in ski resorts during winter, increased traffic leads to a decline in air quality. Another critical issue is waste production. Tourist destinations, such as the Costa dei Trabocchi or the National Park of Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise, experience a significant increase in plastic and waste during peak seasons, which is not always disposed of properly. This is combined with the excessive consumption of resources: hotels, beach resorts, and tourist facilities require large amounts of water and energy, especially in environmentally sensitive areas.              In addition to environmental impacts, mass tourism also affects the quality of life of local residents. In highly visited locations such as Roccaraso or Pescasseroli, overcrowding, heavy traffic, and pressure on public services often occur. This phenomenon, known as overtourism, can also lead to the loss of local cultural identity and the degradation of historical and natural heritage.

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?

Tourism is one of the most important industries globally and has a significant impact on the environment. For this reason, it is essential to manage it responsibly. In a region like Abruzzo, known as “the green region of Europe,” sustainable tourism is crucial to protect natural landscapes, wildlife, and biodiversity.

At the same time, it can represent a great opportunity for local economies by creating jobs and promoting regional products and traditions.           Every traveler plays an important role: even individual choices, when made consciously, can help make tourism more respectful and sustainable.

SOLUTIONS FOR SUSTAINABLE TOURISM

To reduce the negative impact of tourism, it is important to adopt more conscious and responsible behaviors. One of the first choices concerns transportation: whenever possible, it is better to use more eco-friendly options such as trains or buses. In Abruzzo, for example, many destinations can be reached by public transport or explored by bicycle along routes such as the Via Verde of the Costa dei Trabocchi. Accommodation choices also make a difference. Opting for agritourism farms or eco-friendly facilities, which are very common in rural areas of Abruzzo, helps reduce environmental impact and supports the local economy. Another important aspect is food: consuming local products, such as arrosticini, local cheeses, or Abruzzo olive oil, not only enhances tradition but also reduces pollution linked to food transportation. It is also essential to respect nature, especially when visiting parks and nature reserves. In Abruzzo parks, such as the Majella Park or the Gran Sasso, it is important to stay on marked trails, avoid leaving waste, and not disturb wildlife.

Finally, more sustainable tourism also comes from small daily actions: avoiding waste, respecting local traditions, and supporting businesses run by local communities.
