Abruzzo, il "Polmone Verde" d’Europa: Proteggere l’Ecosistema per Salvare il Futuro
Written by Giorgia Rapposelli — 4B Luigi di Savoia

  • Regolazione idrica: I boschi e i suoli fertili agiscono come spugne, trattenendo l’acqua e rilasciandola gradualmente, evitando alluvioni a valle e ricaricando le falde acquifere.

Abruzzo, the Green Lung of Europe: Protecting the Ecosystem to Save the Future”

From the massifs of the Gran Sasso to the ancient beech forests of the Majella, our region preserves a unique biodiversity heritage. But beauty alone is not enough: active care is needed to preserve the ecosystem services that ensure our safety.                                                                            We often take it for granted, but every time we breathe the crisp air of our mountains or drink the pure water flowing from the springs of the Pescara River, we are benefiting from a “service” that nature provides for free. Abruzzo, with over 30% of its territory protected, is not just a postcard for tourists; it is a complex biological system that works tirelessly to maintain the balance of all Central Italy.

The Invisible Value of Ecosystems
Plants and ecosystems in Abruzzo are not merely decorative elements of the landscape. Our forests act as giant natural filters: they purify the air by absorbing tons of CO₂ and release oxygen, helping to mitigate the effects of climate change.  In a morphologically fragile region like ours, vegetation plays a crucial role in hydrogeological safety:                                              Against erosion: Tree roots stabilize steep terrain, preventing landslides and soil erosion during heavy rainfall.
Water regulation: Forests and fertile soils act like sponges, retaining water and releasing it gradually, preventing downstream flooding and replenishing aquifers.

Biodiversity: A Delicate Balance
From the Marsican brown bear to the Apennine wolf, wildlife is the symbol of a resilient natural world. However, supporting biodiversity does not only mean protecting large mammals, but caring for the entire habitat. Every clean river and every unspoiled high-altitude meadow represents a fundamental piece in keeping ecosystems alive for future generations.

Prevention Is Better Than Reconstruction
Protecting the environment in Abruzzo today means, above all, preventing the disasters of tomorrow. Wildfires and uncontrolled urbanization are the main threats that risk disrupting this delicate balance. Nurturing nature through sustainable forest management and the protection of wetlands is not a cost, but an investment in our health and our economy.
