A “WILD” YEAR IN THE HEART OF THE APENNINES: THE PARK IS LOOKING FOR VOLUNTEERS
Have you ever felt that crazy urge to drop everything, close your physics book, and escape to somewhere where even 4G doesn’t reach? Well, apparently, for twenty lucky young people, this dream could become a reality—and it even comes with a monthly expense allowance, which certainly doesn’t hurt.
The National Park of Abruzzo, Lazio, and Molise (PNALM for friends, or for those who don’t want to run out of breath) has officially opened selections for the Universal Civil Service. This opportunity is aimed at us—young people between the ages of 18 and 28—offering about 20 positions to live out a one-year experience in close contact with Italy’s wildest nature.
What do you actually do?
Forget the classic office boredom of photocopying paperwork. Doing Civil Service in the Park means getting your hands dirty. Projects range from environmental protection and wildlife monitoring (yes, we’re talking about bears and wolves, not kittens) to tourist reception and environmental education in schools. In practice, you become the “sentinels” of a unique ecosystem, learning that sustainability isn’t just an Instagram hashtag, but a daily job made of hiking boots and patience.
Why apply?
Beyond the fact that breathing pure air for twelve months would do wonders for anyone used to city smog, there is the educational side. In a world that moves fast and constantly asks us to be super-specialized, stopping for a year to understand how land conservation truly works is a massive value-add for any CV. Not to mention the bonds formed with other volunteers: a year of living together and sharing challenges among the mountains of Abruzzo is the kind of thing that changes your perspective on life.
Of course, you have to be ready to get involved, respect schedules, and take on responsibilities, but the reward is high: the knowledge of having done something useful for the planet and for our future.
So, if you are between 18 and 28 and aren’t afraid of crossing paths with a Marsican Brown Bear along a trail, hurry up and check the official calls. The Park is waiting for you, and honestly, an “office” with a view of the Gran Sasso beats any city desk.
