Written by Giacomo Di Russo — 4B Luigi Di Savoia

Chieti, Abruzzo, a city that looks to the future

In recent years we hear more and more often about sustainable development. But what does it really mean? In simple words, it means living better today without damaging the planet for the future. It is a way of thinking that concerns everyone: from big cities to small towns. Chieti is also moving in this direction. The city, in fact, has started to promote various initiatives to become more “green”, that is, more respectful of the environment. This is important because pollution and climate change are real problems that affect all of our lives. One of the main points on which Chieti is working is sustainable mobility. This means finding ways to move around without polluting too much. For example, the use of bicycles and public transport is being encouraged. Fewer cars around means less traffic and especially less smog. Another important idea is to create more green spaces. Parks and natural areas are not only for relaxing, but also help improve air quality and make the city more livable. In addition, they are perfect places to meet and spend time together.
In addition to mobility, Chieti is also trying to reduce pollution in other ways. For example, by promoting separate waste collection and recycling. Separating plastic, paper and glass may seem like a small thing, but if everyone does it it really makes a difference. Another important aspect is the use of energy. More and more buildings are trying to use renewable sources, such as the sun, thanks to solar panels. This allows the reduction of polluting energy use and saves money in the long term. Citizens also have a fundamental role. It is not enough for the municipality to make projects: everyone’s cooperation is needed. Small daily actions, such as turning off lights when not needed or using less plastic, can contribute to a bigger change. In conclusion, Chieti is trying to build a more sustainable future. It is not an easy path and it takes time, but it is an important step to improve the quality of life. If everyone cooperates, the city can truly become a positive example for other realities.
