Roots of the Future: Spoltore’s green way

In this interview, former Mayor Luciano Di Lorito discusses the origins and success of a deeply symbolic initiative for the Municipality of Spoltore: planting a tree for every newborn child. This project links the cycle of life with environmental protection, demonstrating how sustainability can become a shared value for the entire community.

Good morning, Luciano Di Lorito. Thank you for being with us. During your mandate in Spoltore, an initiative was started to plant a tree for every newborn child. How did this initiative come about?

“We adopted it from a practice in Central-Northern Italy; we liked it and brought it to Spoltore”.

And what impact has this initiative had on the territory and the community?

“Very positive. We received a strong response, interest, and involvement from the people.”

Did you encounter any difficulties in implementing it?

“No, absolutely not. I must say, we initially thought we might, but instead, everything went well—there was great enthusiasm and participation”.

In your opinion, is this a replicable model? What message does it leave today regarding the theme of sustainability?

“A very positive message. When institutions, such as a Municipality, a Region, or even a Government, take an initiative like this, it is positive because it sends a message even to the individual citizen: that trees must be protected and, in fact, should be planted as much as possible because they are an invaluable resource for our world”.

All right, thank you very much. That is all.
