EMERGENCY IN ABRUZZO: WATER IS NO LONGER SAFE
Rivers, lakes, and the sea are increasingly polluted by waste, discharges, and lack of attention. When we think of Abruzzo, we imagine nature, clean water, and beautiful landscapes. However, today the reality is different: water pollution is becoming a serious and increasingly evident problem.
In recent years, many rivers and lakes in the region have changed. The water is often murkier and less clean, and this is not just an aesthetic problem. There is something more serious behind it, affecting both the environment and our health.
One of the main causes is industrial discharge. Some factories release chemical substances into rivers which, even if not always immediately visible, cause enormous damage over time. Added to this are fertilizers used in agriculture: when it rains, these substances end up in waterways and worsen the situation even further.
Household waste also plays an important role. People often do not pay attention and throw plastic or other materials into the environment. All of this eventually ends up in rivers and lakes, making the water dirty and dangerous.
The consequences are already visible. Animals such as trout and freshwater crayfish are decreasing because they can no longer survive in such a polluted environment. When these species disappear, an important natural balance is broken, and the entire ecosystem suffers.
The problem does not stop there. River water flows into the sea, carrying pollution with it. The coasts of Abruzzo are therefore at risk of contamination, especially near river mouths. This can lead to swimming bans and make bathing less safe.
Fishing is also in difficulty. Fishermen may find fewer fish or fish of lower quality, and this is both an economic and cultural problem, as fishing is part of the region’s tradition.
The most worrying thing is that pollution is often not immediately visible. Water may appear clean but still contain harmful substances. For this reason, the problem is often underestimated.
In my opinion, we can no longer ignore it. Stricter controls on industries and tougher regulations are needed, but we also need to change our behavior. It takes little: avoid littering, use fewer chemical products, and respect the environment more.
Water is a fundamental resource for life. If we continue to pollute it, we risk losing not only the beauty of Abruzzo, but also an important part of our future.
